SCHANZ, JAY, JR., 51 - of Cape May Court House, passed away on Thursday, June 26, 2008 at Cape Regional Medical Center. Born in Yokosuka, Japan to the late John J. and Loretta (Russell) Schanz, Sr., he was a longtime resident of Cape May Court House except for 11 years in North Carolina while serving in the United States Marine Corps. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Cape May Court House. He was also a member of the VFW, the Disabled American Veterans, and the American Legion. He was a volunteer for the Forgotten Warriors Vietnam Museum. As a Marine, he served in Grenada and Beirut. He received the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal, the Navy Achievement Medal, and 13 Strike Flight Ribbons for 130 Combat or Hazardous Missions.

Jay loved his motorcycle and woodworking, but he loved his family and kids more than words can say. He enjoyed helping people with odd jobs. He will be sadly missed by his wife, Sue; his children, Jonathan and Megan; his sister, Ginger Sharpe and her husband, John; his father in law and mother in law, Otis and Amanda McKaig; his sisters in law, Barb Hoover and her husband, Ken, and Kathy Linares and her husband, Rob; his brother in law, Steve McKaig and his wife, Lucy; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Erin Marie Schanz, and his mother in law, Doris McKaig.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 3, 2008 at 7:30 p.m. at the Radzieta Funeral Home, 9 Hand Avenue, Cape May Court House, where viewing will begin at 6:00 p.m. Interment will be private in Fairview Cemetery, Cape May Court House. Memorial donations may be made to the Forgotten Warriors Vietnam Museum, 529 Forrestal Road, Cape May Airport, Rio Grande, NJ 08242. Condolences at www.radzieta.com

At the Cape May County Airport- home of the Forgotten Warriors Museum

Pleas join us as we dedicate the “Forgotten Warriors Vietnam Museum” to those who gave all in Vietnam.

Join us as we place the names of those 21 brave soldiers into our new black granite memorial wall and create a permanent place to honor their memory.

We will celebrate this day with an open house, special guests, elected officials, color guard units, gun salute, re-enactors groups and much more throughout the day.

The bus will leave from the Cape May airport and go to Washington, DC. The main purpose is to do tracings of the 21 veteran’s names from Cape May County that are on the wall. The tracings will be brought back to CM to be used for a memorial service and memorial dedication at the Forgotten Warriors Vietnam Museum.  

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is located near the Washington Memorial on the National Mall in Washington D.C.
